La Academia de las Artes y las Ciencias Cinematográficas dio a conocer las listas cortas de 12 categorías para su 98.ª edición, entre ellas, cortometraje documental y de animación, largometraje documental e internacional, maquillaje y peluquería, casting, música original, sonido y efectos visuales.
Tras reunir a las 86 posibles contendientes a Mejor Película Internacional, la Academia presentó las quince cintas que avanzarán a la ronda de votación. Después de dejar fuera algunos títulos como La misteriosa mirada del flamenco (Chile), Un poeta (Colombia) y No nos moverán (México), aún participan largometrajes iberoamericanos como Belén, de Dolores Fonzi; El agente secreto, de Kleber Mendonça Filho; y Sirât, de Oliver Laxe.
En la categoría de Cinematografía se perfilan 16 cintas, que serán votadas por una subdivisión de directores de fotografía. Frankenstein, Bugonia, F1, Hamnet, Marty Supreme, Valor Sentimental, Die, My Love, Sinners y Song Sung Blue son algunas de las aspirantes. Estas cintas también apuntan a nominaciones en las ramas de Casting y Maquillaje y Peluquería.
Quince canciones, de un total de 65, avanzaron en la categoría de Canción Original. Relucen los temas de filmes como Tron: Ares, F1, Avatar: Fuego y Cenizas, Wicked: Por siempre, KPop Demon Hunters y Sinners, también elegibles en Música Original. En el caso del Sonido, se han considerado Frankenstein, Una batalla tras otra, Springsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere y Superman.
La votación para las nominaciones se llevará a cabo del 12 al 16 de enero de 2026, por los miembros de la Academia. Las nominaciones finales se darán a conocer el 22 de enero. Este año, se otorgarán premios en 24 categorías, cada una con cinco nominados, excepto el rubro de Mejor Película, que contará con 10 títulos. La 98.ª edición de los Óscar se celebrará el 15 de marzo de 2026 en el Teatro Dolby y será televisada en vivo.
